Wendy North’s mission is for every teacher to understand how to teach every student to read and write, and to ensure that all students (with or without learning disabilities) read to their highest ability. Wendy began her career as a special education teacher in pre-K and elementary settings, and became trained in the Orton Gillingham multi-sensory structured language approach. After a decade working one-on-one with struggling teen and adult readers at Learning House in Guilford, Wendy became passionate about making a greater impact by focusing on teaching teachers.
Since joining the team as a mentor in 2002, she has trained teachers to understand the intricacies of the structure of the English language, recognize and respect the stages of reading development, have the knowledge to successfully navigate published literacy programs, and learn the best research based practices so they can reach every student. Wendy has worked with teachers from preschool through to high school in urban and suburban, public, private and charter schools. Though explicit, systematic and thorough, Wendy is never rote. She is especially adept at responding to individuals and meeting them where they are in their learning—as she encourages all teachers to be with their students.
Wendy is a graduate of Southern Connecticut State University, holding both B.S. and Masters degrees in Special Education, the latter with a concentration in reading disabilities.
